Hurst Castle is a fortress built by Henry VIII in 1544 to defend the Solent against the threat of invasion by the French.  Subsequently extended and modernised during successive generations, today the site retains much of its grandeur. Situated at the end of a 1.5 mile shingle spit that joins the castle to the mainland, the castle faces the Isle of Wight and Needles rocks.
